Clacton Pier strengthening project gets underway

A £300,000 project to strengthen the concrete pillars underneath Clacton Pier’s decking has begun. The work will be carried out on more than 3,000 of the pillars, of which many are over 90-years-old. The pier’s owners said that few significant repairs had been carried out on these support columns since they were first put in place and revealed that small sections of their outer concrete had fallen away in places, exposing the metal reinforcements inside. With several new developments planned for the pier, these now need removing and replacing in order to support the additional weight.
