Pre-Triennial treasury signal? Economic argument for FOBT maximum stakes dismissed
As the industry awaits the Triennial Review consultation document, expected before the end of October, analysts have labeled treasury secretary Chris Philip MP’s recent support for a £2 maximum stake as “particularly significant”. Hammond’s backing came in the form of a ResPublica report recommending a £2 maximum stake, along with speculation on how much influence the conservative minister holds within the Treasury. “The self-styled ‘free marketer’s’ dismissal of economic arguments for non-intervention seems particularly significant,” said Dan Waugh, partner at gambling consultancy Regulus Partners. “Given his official role, he may be assumed to have some influence on the Chancellor [ ] The post Pre-Triennial treasury signal? Clacton Pier strengthening project gets underway
A £300,000 project to strengthen the concrete pillars underneath Clacton Pier’s decking has begun. The work will be carried out on more than 3,000 of the pillars, of which many are over 90-years-old. The pier’s owners said that few significant repairs had been carried out on these support columns since they were first put in place and revealed that small sections of their outer concrete had fallen away in places, exposing the metal reinforcements inside. With several new developments planned for the pier, these now need removing and replacing in order to support the additional weight. Betting firms to be named and shamed for failing to fund Gamble Aware
British betting companies are under coming pressure to help tackle a funding shortfall for Gamble Aware. The UK charity said it would begin to identify donors next year, meaning operators not on the list might be identifiable by their absence. The tactic is being introduced after Gamble Aware fell £5m short of its £13m industry contributions target last year. “We cannot understand [the drop in contributions] and find it pretty inexplicable given the attention being paid to gambling-related harm. It is a huge risk to the industry,” chair Kate Lampard said. World’s best airport praises Brighton’s “goofball eccentricity”
Singapore Changi Airport has promoted Brighton for its “quirky, artisan and indie” nature in a new travel guide. The author dubbed the seaside destination as “a most un-English town” that is “a warmer, weirder and wilder alternative” to London. Government to crackdown on FOBT stakes in long-awaited industry review
The maximum stake on fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBTs) is to be dramatically cut following a triennial review on the UK gambling industry. In the long-awaited review, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) minister Tracey Crouch unveiled proposals to address FOBTs, as well as online gaming and advertising. “We have seen online gambling grow rapidly and we need to protect players in this space, while also making sure those experiencing harm relating to gambling receive the help they need,” Crouch said.
